  • Phase 4

I was happy with the contrast that this color-scheme provided my drawing: rich and lively in the front with deep saturated colors, bleeck and depressing colors in the back. The eye tends to only see what's in the saturated parts, and that's why this contrast was so fitting for my concept of optical illusion: only if you look a little further, you start seeing what's wrong.

However the blue waterfall was itching my brain because it was asking way too much attention since there are no other blues in the drawing. So after some contemplating I deleted it to finalise my drawing. I was now finished and ready to submit my final drawing!

  • Phase 3

Before I enter the last phase of coloring and final-editing my drawing, I always do a quick monochrome check; the lack of colors obligates me to check the drawing in its purest form and look for possible mistakes or too empty spaces.

And here the lines of the mid- and back-stage are finished. Coloring not yet quite on point though...

  • Phase 1

I always start with the front of my drawings (kind of logical), here you see the front-stage drawn and colored.

  • Concept sketch (pencil)

My sketch further explored the perspectives I wanted to create: the grapevines that lead the eye towards the cosy house, where a child is playing with its dog. The front is covered in shade, creating a nice contrast between the darker parts in the front and the game of lights on the farm. The father in the shaded front is nearing the house, carrying some vegetables he just harvested. Upon seeing his house and his child, he smiles, because everyting seems as it should be, with lots of details emphasising the effort the man makes to live and farm alongside nature: the bee-hives, recycling waste, a windmill, solar panels, sustainable seeds...

When drawing this kind of illustration, I often deviate from the path that my sketch layed out. But now I was pretty happy with the lines and perspectives of my sketch, so I followed it almost to the letter.

I often change a lot of stuff of the sketch when I start drawaing for real

  • Doodle for ideas

This is the doodle I first made where I discovered the concept of my drawing: a lovely rural scene with hanging grapevines, creating a impressionistic game of lights and shadows. I wanted to play with an atmospheric perspective, where the front-stage looks very lovely at first sight, but when you look long enough the mid- and back-stage is a whole lot more gnarly.
