  • Final Painting

Had lots of fun at these late stages of the process, working with brushtrokes and careful edge control. Finally deepened the colors of the background to enhance the feeling of a closed, private space. The warm light coming from the top brings an atmosphere of hope.

  • Color and Lighting layers

After deciding how the values of the final piece would be, I started working on the linework to make sure the perspective was good, and everything looked clear and functional. Although I was trying to put a lot of small details in the image, I wanted to be sure I wasn't pulling too much attention from the focal point. In order to avoid losing myself in the image's details, I tried to be more precise when separating layers, something I usually struggle with. But it was worth it, as it was an easier work to set up the warm light against the cool shadows.

The daisies around the grass and the picnic  mat were late ideas I had, that I wasn't sure would work. Fortunately, I loved how it turned out, because it brought a calmer and brighter atmosphere to the illustration.

My next steps now will be to start painting opaquely and adding more atmosphere to the scene, such as flying petals and sunlight rays.

  • Value Sketch

Value sketch to make sketch 4 a bit more solid. The main change to the image is that now I'm showing this is a closed space, and I've given less importance to the "house".

  • Fifth sketch

I tried to mix what had worked well in the other sketches in this one. I really like how private and unique this place seems to be, but I'm struggling a bit with this composition - the narrative is not so clear. Next week I'll update a Wip of the chosen sketch.

  • Fourth sketch

After going a bit of the theme in the third sketch, I decided do something more obvious when drawing an oasis. A desert like place around, and the character is lying down in this green oasis, chilling and playing with the creatures there. I also brought the robots from the 4th image, and it worked really well with this weird rounded office/house to make a good mix of futuristic roots. I'm still finishing up a 5th sketch in which I'll try to mix what worked in these four, but for now this image seems the strongest to me. Although sketch 1 is still a good possibility

  • Third sketch

For this third sketch, I decided to continue exploring a way to turn this idea into something more futuristic. An oasis also represents a place of fertile grounds, and I felt like a kitchen would be something interesting to explore. Although I like this sketch, I feel its a bit of the theme. But I love the small functional robots. They bring an interesting way to show what I wanted.

  • Second sketch

When starting out this sketch, I wanted to integrate the word futuristic into my ideas. I felt my first sketch was too much "roots" and too little "future". So I decided to do a working creative place where you could hide and chill, with a bit more of a futuristic structure to it. The idea of water all around, like an aquarium could also fit in that context.

  • First Sketch

For this first idea I wanted to depict that feeling of chilling in a swing hammock and looking at the night sky, something I love to do. The place should to feel wide and connected to my "roots" - plants, books, painting supplies - all of that scattered across the oasis. I provided it with lots os plants and fantastical creatures to bring life to it, trying to make the oasis feel more alive.
