critter fancam
these silly bois give me a lot of joy
The painting in progress, adding more detail into the painting. Placing in photo texture for the background as base, wrestling with how much I wanted the landscape to make sense.
I had an idea of making the glowy critters bird shaped, but I felt little bunny-looking things felt cosier.
Figuring out the details of the character and objects. (Initially I thought about a cable that maybe leads to an off-camera spaceship, but it might have come across as too robot?) I was inspired by the flowing fibres of the skintight space suit which is apparently is being worked on in real life, and I wanted a flowing organic look to the shapes. I wanted everything to feel still practical in some way despite this being complete fantasy, and thought was given to how things might join together based on my own memories of traditional art equipment.
Following a basic idea of doing plein air landscape painting on an alien planet, I made a 3D base since my vision of the lighting was complex and this piece was intended to be a challenge for me to draw more environments.
A blank mannequin was posed in Gravity Sketch since it felt more intuituve for me, and it was imported to Blender for lighting and some quick textures. The plan was that I will flesh out the design of everything as I paint it, by instinct and intuition. In a way, I was also chasing a "flow" of creative artmaking by making this artwork about "flow".
I started work on the idea on a busy schedule but I had a quick deep think about the theme itself. The theme can be interpreted as personal oasis removed from the world's many problems, but can one construct a true oasis that is removed from the world's problems...by thinking about the world's problems? It became clear to me that my aim should be to capture a mood instead of constructing a world, as I didn't feel confident in presenting 'solutions' to any big real issue as a singluar artist or do them justice in a short amount of time.
My oasis has always been art itself, and I thought I should follow just that simple feeling.
I aften struggle a lot with the initial composition phase and then the blocking phase.
I often approach paintings as a background artist, which means I have to sort through my own mess of a concept and figure out how to layer and break down a piece and set myself up for an easier time painting further down the line.
As soon as each section is blocked out then the real fun can begin and I can just vibe out and paint a bunch. Thankfully I'm hitting that point now!
I've extended the shot to try and seperate the 'oasis' from city and wall. I reserve the right to completely 180 on that decision and bring the piece back into a square comp (which for some reason I love so much!)
I'm taking a lot of inspiration from some of my favourite artists and pieces of media.
I adore the shapes and strong colour blocking from Scott Wills and his work on Samurai Jack. I'd love to get some more of that strong stylisation in this piece if possible.
For the city and the atmosphere; I've taken frequent inspiration from the game INSIDE by Playdead. The atmosphere and lighting in that game is present, dominating and powerful. I will need to make sure not to overwork details potentially breaking some of the larger stronger shapes.
Immediate issues I see with the comp now that it's up on the progress page; The new tree shape isn't working and is acting against the other shapes. I will need to experiement here and see what works.
The walls top line is wonky is aexactly the wrong way. I want to break up some of the direct lines in the comp but also have to keep them compositionally tasty!
I'm currently in Germany and surrounded by plants and dappled lighting. I'm trying to spy on the neighbours vegatble garden and sketch some plants that I could involve in my oasis dock/pontoon!
The piece overall still reads too dark (a continuouse issue I face)
I will make sure to bring up the lights and really push them to emphisise the focal point of the lit atmosphere surrounding the oasis area!
My concept depicts a fictional world in which wars are over and war vehichles have been magically turned into wildlife creatures. In these early sketches Im exploring how would the war vehichles wildlife creatures woud look like , how machine-like vs how organic .and natural they will be as well as what will be the nature of the environment around them in the scene Im depicting.
I began by drafting a few thumbnails for different compositions I could try to tell the story of excited, bookish youths marveling at the Tree of Babel, a great library that would serve as the centerpiece for my oasis. I made a point of trying different perspectives and exploring different possible designs for the massive trees in this environment.
