  • Closing Thoughts / Carmela

So, this is the end of STL... but it's also only a beginning for us!

Now we need to start working on a real pitch deck, in order to get in front of the right people and find the funding we need for the project. We will also need to look for the appropiate team of creatives and artists that will help us make our movie come true. The hardest part is yet to come.

Thank you for reading our diaries and for being partt of our journey! And don't forget to follow our Instagram account to keep up-to-date with our project!

  • Week 8 Recap / Carmela

    Week 8 was a pretty crazy week…

We had our weekly meeting with Maria instead of Susana (missed her though!) and she gave us a confidence boost as she always does.

Clara came back from Paris after a crazy weekend and a busy, busy start of the week.

We had our last mentorship with Shiho, who gave us some good advice for the recording of the final versions of the voiceovers for the videos.

All in all, it was a good week but a stressful one because we're very close to the end…

We're gonna end up missing all this once it's over… we almost don't want it to end!

  • Learning with Carmela / B-Roll

We've been learning a lot these last few weeks, and we wouldn't want you to miss out on some very interesting concepts that we've been learning or revising with our mentors! :)

    What is a B-roll?

B-roll is secondary footage, often used as cutaway footage, to provide context and visual interest to help tell your story.

  • Learning with Carmela / Story Beat

We've been learning a lot these last few weeks, and we wouldn't want you to miss out on some very interesting concepts that we've been learning or revising with our mentors! :)

    What is a Story Beat?

A beat is a moment that propels the story forward and compels the viewer to take stock of what could happen next. Each scene may be comprised of several different beats. Some story beats are subtle, while others are obvious.

Cool, huh? Remember this is applicable to whatever story-based project you have going on!

  • Learning with Carmela / Character Arc

We've been learning a lot these last few weeks, and we wouldn't want you to miss out on some very interesting concepts that we've been learning or revising with our mentors! :)

    What is a character arc?

A character arc is the transformation or inner journey of a character over the course of a story. If a story has a character arc, the character begins as one sort of person and gradually transforms into a different sort of person in response to changing developments in the story.

  • Week 8 Highlight / Carmela

This week's highlight is, without a doubt, the help we got from the two amazing human beings that are working on the music for the Teaser and the Final Pitch Video.

One of them we've already mentioned a couple of times, Chrisna Lungala, who finished the music for our Teaser and got us to tear up with his amazing talent. It's such a pleasure to work with people that vibe exactly on the same frequency as you.

The other amazing person that's been helping us is Isabel Arranz, great actor and singer. She's made some lovely vocals for our Final Pitch Video… Can't wait for you to hear it!!

Go follow these two lovely people on Instagram!!

This last week was a pretty crazy one, but we finally finished the script for the Teaser and the Final Pitch.

We got loads of help from all the mentors, but we certainly couldn’t have done it without Kris Pearn and his absolute dedication.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

  • Week 7 Recap / Carmela

This last week we met with David Prescott, who gave us some great tips on how to film during the weekend that Clara was going to come to Paris. He suggested that we just let the camera roll and make versions and versions of what we want to say using our own words and talking to each other naturally.

He also posed us a very useful question: How do you pitch best? (live, with a video…)

Then we met with Chrisna, our composer, who sent us a version of the music for the Teaser that we LOVED.

Last meetings were Shiho and Kris (another extra mentorship!) on Friday. They both gave us great ideas for the script and suggested adding some things that were missing.

They both insisted on keeping in mind that our audience might not know anything about the project, and it should be clear enough for them.

Clara flew to Paris on Saturday, and thanks to our dad, who came to help us film, we finished the shooting and even had the time to focus on the Instagram Finalists Take Over on Sunday.

Here’s a little Q&A that we put together answering some of the questions we got :)

  • Week 6 Recap / Carmela

This week we focused mainly on the progress of the documentary teaser and the final pitch. And we even did some praying...

On monday, our STL guide Susana asked us to update and send to her our schedule and planning again, which we did.

On tuesday, we reviewed with Kris all the loglines that we had been working on, and he insisted that we should start as soon as possible with a rough version of a teaser focusing on the emotions.

For Vani’s mentorship, the day after Kris, we already had a first version. After showing it to Vani and Susana we stayed silent for a few minutes to process what we had just shown her. Then we prayed. Then we stayed silent again... We were definitely feeling a bit lost and tired. She said that our first version was “brilliant”, but suggested to keep working on the structure and start the teaser focusing more on the character, to be able to empathize from the begining (suggestion that we took on board for the next versions).

Finally, on friday, we showed the fourth and last version of the teaser (until now) to Shiho, who gave us some really good feedback on it. She liked the circular structure of starting and ending in the garden, for example. But she also pointed out some things that could be improved.

That’s all for this week. Let’s see what happens next…

This is our pitch guideline. It's not universal and not even a final structure, it's still a work in progress based on the structure our mentors Vani and Shiho gave us. But hopefully it will inspire your own pitch outlines! ;)

  • The "Frustration" Week / Carmela

This will be remembered as the “Frustration” week. It all started with a little domestic accident where Clara cut her cornea… She’s better now, but that’s why she was wearing glasses in the video!

Perhaps in a natural response after last’s week overworking, this week we both hit our frustration limit. We both felt at different times that our hard work wasn’t paying off or wasn’t recognized enough.

How did you deal with all the frustration? You may ask… Well, Paula overworking even more. Don’t try this at home, kids. If your sister tells you “You can’t do this, you will not get enough sleep”...listen to her. She is probably right. Staying awake an entire night and going to work the next day is NOT a good idea. Clara, on the other hand, had a couple of emotional meltdowns, got extremely proud and just tried by all means to prove wrong everyone thinking that we weren't working enough.

Also, we both got our period this week, which probably made it all much worse… People on their periods should really have the right to a couple of days off, don’t you think? xD

  • Week 6 Highlight / Carmela

The best part of this tough week was finally coming up with not only one, but 4 initial versions of our prototype: a teaser!

As always, it’s a work in progress. We are still working on it, finding the best clips, refining the script, working on the music with Chrisna Lungala…

But hey, that’s a great step forward in week #6! Are you excited to see the final teaser?

  • Quick tip for editing a documentary timeline / Carmela

<div class="lexxy-content lightbox-container"> <p>Hey! Are you planning on edit a loooong documentary timeline with lots and lots of clips that need to be organized? We have a tip that may help you!</p> <p> </p> <p>Back in 2019 we realized we needed to create a sort of database of all the clips we had to quickly be able to filter them and know what we had in order to edit the documentary... And because of Paula's "deformación profesional" as we say in Spanish (or in other words, because of her tendency to look at everything from her "historian point of view" treating it as a potential historical source and because of her love for excels), we started doing precisely this, an excel.</p> <p> </p> <p>Buuut to be honest that wasn't helpful at all from a creative point of view. That's why Kris Pearn's suggestion to do a timeline with the clips was a big "ahá moment" for us.</p> <p> </p> <div class="lightbox-container"> <p>The tip we have for you is this: use DaVinci Resolve! It's a powerful and FREE software mainly used for color grading, buuuut it has a wonderful function that allows you to put markers in you clips (or in the timeline, but be careful if you do that. If you move your clip the marker will not move with it) aaaand the best part is that...</p> <br><p> </p> <br><p> </p> <div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="https://trojan-unicorn.s3.amazonaws.com/ckeditor_assets/pictures/291/content_Resolve3.JPG"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="https://trojan-unicorn.s3.amazonaws.com/ckeditor_assets/pictures/291/content_Resolve3.JPG"></a></div></div> <br><p> </p> <br><p> ... then you can FILTER THEM! You can do it by using the title of the marker, the keywords... We are in love with this function!</p> <br><p> </p> <br><p> </p> <div class="pswp-gallery lightbox " data-controller="lightbox" data-lightbox-target="container"><div class="lightbox__item"><a target="_blank" data-lightbox-target="item" href="https://trojan-unicorn.s3.amazonaws.com/ckeditor_assets/pictures/292/content_Resolve2.JPG"><img alt="" loading="lazy" src="https://trojan-unicorn.s3.amazonaws.com/ckeditor_assets/pictures/292/content_Resolve2.JPG"></a></div></div> <br><p> </p> <br><p> Did you knew that tip? Do you use it? Let us know in the comments! </p> <br><p> </p> <br><p> PS: Shortcut in Windows for creating a marker "M". And shortcut for opening the edit window "M" again.
